Very, very few people really understand the Yoginis. Sometimes they are called Dakinis by the Tibetan Buddhists but the 64 Yoginis are not to be confused with your average Dakini. The 64 Yoginis are servants to the Goddess Bhairavi. They are energies that can be manipulated for positive material gains but they tend toward destruction their own, Neela Shakti. Sadhanas of the Yoginis have been given in printed form by the famous tantric Sri Mali Dutt.

The 64 Yoginis dance a destructive influence through the Kalachakra. This has been mentioned in the Kalachakra Tantra, and its commentary. In Prasna Marga, Harihara mentions the progress of the Yogini through the Kalachakra, as well as Vaidyanath Dikshita in Jataka Parijata. The deeper understanding of the Yogini is kept secret because the dark tantra that can be done with their knowledge can destroy anything. It is often used by astrologers for medical purposes and to see the movement and obstruction of Prana in the body. Simplified systems of the Yogini dasa and the Yogini movement are commonly used in the Himalayas of India, and in Nepal . One astrologer told me he only uses Yogini dasa, since this is Kali yuga. I have given some simple kalachakra techniques in the Jyotish section of this site.

One is rarely advised to study the Yoginis. It is important to have proper Kavach before tapping into these energies. The link between the mundane world and the realm of the neela shakti (Kali rupa) takes a step closer with the servants of the Mahavidya Bhairavi. They are a threshhold where what is hidden can become incredibly alive. The Bhairav stotram with proper nyasa is one good kavach to practice if one wishes to study the Yoginis. One should also study the goddess Bhairavi who is connected with the purification of the lagna (the ascendant), and who awakens that which is always in you.

The Kalachakra Tantra teaches the outer mandala of the solar system and then goes into the inner mandala of the body with its channels and pranas. Next it goes into the deeper meditation aspects of the kalachakra. The movement of the heavenly bodies, the breath, the consciousness and the understanding of “who am I” are all interacting with the dance of the Yogini.
